چکیده

From 1990 to 1998, estimations of the effective dose from external and internal irradiation due to l 3 7 Cs and >,ACs were carried out for inhabitants in rural villages in theBryansk region, Russia, highly contaminated due to the Chernobyl accident in 1986. Yearly expeditions were conducted in autumn. The external effective dose was estimated from measurements with thermoluminescent (TL)dosemeters worn by the participants during one month each year. The internal effective dose was estimated from measurements of the urinary concentration of caesium radionuclides, together with measurements of the body content using a portable detector. The mean effective dose from external and internal irradiation varied between 1.2 and 2.5 mSv per year between 1990 and 1998. The total mean effective dose decreased, on average, 7% per year, while the mean external dose decreased by 15% per year. The dose rate from internal irradiation decreased more slowly than the dose rate from external irradiation, showing large variations from year to year depending to a great extent on dietary habits. The contribution from the external dose to the total dose was between 50-70%, depending on the village. The cumulated effective dose for the 70-year period after the accident was calculated to be 100 mSv with the assumption that both internal and external dose will decrease by 2% per year.

External and internal irradiation of a rural Bryansk (Russia) population from 1990 to 2000, following high deposition of radioactive caesium from the Chernobyl accident.

In 1990, a joint Nordic-Russian project was initiated in order to make independent estimations of the effective dose to selected groups of inhabitants in a highly contaminated area around the city of Novozybkov in the western Bryansk region of Russia. The inhabitants were living in six villages with initial contamination levels of (137)Cs between 0.9 and 2.7 MBq m(-2). Some villages had been de...

Evaluation of (137)Cs body burden in inhabitants of Bryansk Oblast, Russian Federation, where a high incidence of thyroid cancer was observed after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

To determine the current risk of internal radiation exposure after the Chernobyl accident, the (137)Cs body burden of the inhabitants of Bryansk Oblast, Russian Federation was evaluated, from 1998 to 2008. The study population is composed of 84 666 people who visited Bryansk No. 2 Hospital. A whole-body counter was used for measurement of (137)Cs body burden. (137)Cs concentration was significa...

Radiation dosimetry for highly contaminated Belarusian, Russian and Ukrainian populations, and for less contaminated populations in Europe.

The explosions at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP) in Ukraine early in the morning of 26 April 1986 led to a considerable release of radioactive materials during 10 d. The cloud from the reactor spread many different radionuclides, particularly those of iodine (131I) and cesium (134Cs and 137Cs), over the majority of European countries, but the greatest contamination occurred over vast ...

Living in Contaminated Territories: a Lesson in Stakeholder Involvement

Experience of long term radioactive contamination of the environment, especially in the territories the most affected by the Chernobyl accident, have shown that the omnipresence of radioactivity in the daily life was deeply altering the relationships of the individuals towards their environment, perceived as globally deteriorated, and to the others. Inhabitants of contaminated territories exper...

Model of External Exposure of Population Living in the Areas Contaminated After the Chernobyl Accident and its Validation

INTRODUCTION Models of external exposure for the population living in contaminated areas developed before the Chernobyl accident (1) were improved by taking into account post-Chernobyl data in Russia (2) and in Ukraine (3). Later, within the framework of the joint international EU-FSU research project JSP-5 «Pathway analysis and dose distributions», a general model (JSP-5 model) applicable to t...
